3D printing is a broad topic. Deciding which technology to use can be difficult – there are many variables between 3D print companies when it comes to turnaround time, cost, and parts production. Often, the best way to make the decision is to look at the capabilities and qualities that are needed. If you’re wondering whether SLS or FDM printing is right for your business, look no further. Here are three reasons to choose SLS printing over FDM every time.

3 Reasons Why SLS Printing is Better Than FDM Printing

Why SLS Printing is Better Than FDM

1.      No Support Structure

SLS printing, or selective layer sintering, uses a different technique than FDM printing. Because the unsintered powder provides the part with the necessary support, SLS does not require an outside support structure like FDM does. This allows for more design freedom. Clients can be far more creative with what they want their end products to look like.

Another benefit of not having a support structure is that there is nothing to remove when the job is complete, reducing the risk of damage to the part itself.

2.      Complex Geometry

Because of the design freedom, more intricate and highly complex geometries can be constructed. Think beyond just unique shapes – SLS printing is capable of creating moving, interlocking parts and mechanical joints, as well as detailed interior features like internal cavities.

3.      Better Precision

SLS printing provides high-dimensional accuracy. What does that mean? It’s more precise than FDM with tighter tolerances. General tolerances for SLS are +/- 0.010” for the first inch, plus +/- 0.002” for every inch thereafter. Comparatively, FDM general tolerances are +/- a single build layer thickness for the first inch, plus +/- 0.002” for every inch thereafter.
